Learning to groom!Riding School: Overview

Karen Feeney heads this the Meadowville Farm Schooling Program . She places a strong emphasis on horsemanship and sportsmanship. Students are taughtfrom the beginning how to groom, tack, and care for the horses and ponies, and are expected to tack and untack before and after each lesson.

“I like to make sure the students have a healthy respect for the horses not only as an animal, but as a partner.” Karen explains “if you simply come out and Lucas and Skittles learning ride !get on the horse, you may be a rider, but never a true horseman.” Meadowville Farm not only strives to teach children how to work with their ponies or horses as partners, it also strives to be a clean and healthy enviroment. Riders are expceted to help prepare their horses for the lesson and take care of them at the end. They also are expected to clean all tack and grooming area. By doing this they will learn that riding and horses is a responibility not to be taken lightly. Riders at Meadowville learn maturity and self disipline far beyond their years.

LEARNING TO RIDE

Josh and Skittles learning to ride! Our riding school offers both introductory private lessons and group lessons for all ages 5 and over.

An hour long introductory lesson is required of each new student. The goal of the introductory lesson is to make the rider comfortable with horses on the ground. This lesson covers all the ground work expected of the rider before and after future mounted riding lessons. Lasting between 45 to 60 minutes, the rider will learn proper brushing, tacking, and untacking. In addition, 5-10 minutes of riding are included during this time for a quick introduction and assessment of skill level.

* After the intro lesson, hour long group lessons are available. Each group will have no more than five riders in each.

RIDING ATTIRE

Riders are required to wear helmets, long pants and good, sturdy boots with a low heel. Please no sneakers. Meadowville Farm will provide all tack and grooming equipment. Helmets are available to borrow, but there are limited sizes and availability. As lessons continue, we recommend that each rider purchase his/her own helmet.
